Known as the Gateway to the Desert, Foum Zguid is the perfect starting point for embarking on a Sahara Desert camping trip or crossing the Iriki National Park all the way to M'Hamid El Ghizlane.
However, it is also a vibrant small town with a wealth of historical and cultural treasures that our guide has chosen to unveil to you during this one-day tour.
Program:
In the morning, you will be greeted at your hotel for a walking tour of Foum Zguid. We will take you through the winding streets of the ancient kasbah, Oum El Hench, where we will share its history and tales. You will have the opportunity to admire the remaining architectural details and imagine the life that once thrived in this extraordinary place. Our path will then lead us to the palm grove, where you can observe cultivated plots and gain an understanding of the current climate challenges faced by these regions undergoing increasingly noticeable changes.
We will have lunch in the city center, where you can enjoy observing the daily life of the locals in this bustling gathering place. If you visit on a Thursday, you will have the chance to experience the weekly souk, a vibrant market where merchants and villagers from the surrounding areas come together in a lively atmosphere.
After lunch, we will visit the artisans' village located at the outskirts of the town. In a magnificent building that showcases Moroccan craftsmanship, you will have the opportunity to meet the artisans and explore their workshops. From leather goods to traditional clothing, carpet weaving, and jewelry making, our guide will introduce you to these talented artisans and provide insights into how ancient tools are still used today. This living heritage sustains many families and preserves ancestral knowledge. It will be a culturally enriching experience with plenty of opportunities for exchange.
In the late afternoon, we will take you to a vantage point overlooking the city, where you can admire an impressive panorama that reveals the vastness of Foum Zguid, including its ancient kasbah, palm grove, and the distant mountains marking the beginning of the vast plains of the Iriki National Park.
Finally, we will accompany you back to your hotel after a fulfilling day during which you will have gained a deeper understanding of the local life and culture.
